Sir:
Receiving word that No. 54 Sqdn was to be pulled from the front line tomorrow, I went out for one last look at the trenches this evening. Flying at 1000 feet, well under the overcast, I passed over Arras and then made my way south along the lines, waving to our troops and strafing the Germans. A light rain began falling southeast of Mercatel.
I continued until I was northeast of Bapaume, when two aircraft from Jasta 11 dove on me, an Albatros D3 and a Halberstadt D3. I'd already used most of my ammunition strafing the trenches, but I was able to fire on the Halberstadt twice and the Albatros once before running out. The Germans headed for home at that point and, needless to say, I did not pursue them but headed for home myself.
