Sir:
I took the Triplane up this morning for a brief circuit behind our lines. At 10,000 feet I'd lost sight of the ground due to light rain, but I believe I was near Bapaume when four Albatros D3's dove on me. They were very well handled, and I never got a shot off. We fought our way down to 5000 feet, but I was disoriented in the dogfight and inadvertently crossed the German lines after it broke up. I descended to 1000 feet to avoid Archie, and headed north. About the time I recognized Beaumont, my engine started running rough. Now that I knew where I was, I headed for the North Advanced Landing Field. My engine quit just after I'd crossed into Allied territory, and I set my aircraft down hard just short of the field.
