Sir:
Lt. Goodhew wasn't happy sending us so far behind the lines in such clear weather. He instructed us to fly to the objective at 20,000 feet. If no cloud cover had developed by the time we got there, we were not to descend to expose the plates, but were to return to base. The issue became moot, though, as our engine started having serious trouble while we were still on the Allied side of the lines, northwest of Mercatel. Sgt. Demott did an excellent job of bringing us back to Corbie with little loss of altitude, but the engine failed altogether on the approach to the field. He was able to put us down gently despite the loss of power.
