54 Sqdn A Flight AAR: Offensive Line Patrol 12 APR

Sir:

I had 2Lt. Burns take myself and 2Lt. Justice on an Offensive Line Patrol over the center of our lines, so I might become familiar with the area. We maintained an altitude of 1000 feet, crossing the front between Arras and Mercatel in clearing skies.

A goods train was spotted, and we all attacked it, with Burns and myself achieving hits. Not wanting to press our luck on my first operation with the flight, we turned for home. We attached a canal boat near the front, but did not observe any damage.

Three Albatros D2's attacked us as we crossed back over the lines. I was immediately caught up with one of them, and managed to get several shots off before my gun jammed. Justice and Burns also ended up in individual action before the dogfight broke up.

We returned to the aerodrome at Corbie without further incident.

Ack! I can't believe I forgot to strafe the trenches as I passed over. I could have easily doubled my score of ... +4 points.
