54 Sqdn A Flight AAR: Dawn Patrol 13 APR

Sir:

I am pleased to report a successful dawn patrol for "A" Flt, No. 54 Sqdn. I led 2Lts. Justice, Burns, Kane-Brittain, and Barbieri on a low-altitude sweep behind enemy lines. Although the weather at take off was very clear, it rapidly deteriorated and the bulk of the operation was conducted in mist. We passed over Cambrai, passed east of Douai and Beaumont, then passed over Lens and Vimy. A brief thunderstorm was encountered as we crossed the trenches returning to Allied territory.

While machine guns fired at us on several occasions, the only skilled machine gunners we encountered were located just behind the German lines southwest of Cambrai. Justice and Kane-Brittain both had their fabric holed. Two German fighters dove out of the clouds between Cambrai and Douai, but broke off without engaging us. Other than that, the patrol was uneventful.
